transport woes
Traffic Jams at Expressway is a common sight, sometimes even so at non-peak hours. And so they implemented ERP. The problem persisted. They increased the price. The problem is still there.
Public transport seems to be in a mess. Cab drivers go around touting and not charge by the meter. Though it may be a few black sheeps, but it seems they only have a few inspectors to maintain law and order among the many thousands of cab drivers out there.
Public buses and MRT are just too crowded. Packed. Frequency seems to be too low. Buses after buses that arrived at your stop already filled with passengers to the brim. For the MRT, the frequency is still ok, though I feel 7 minutes to wait for a train during non-peak hours is a tad too long. At least I still can get into the train during peak hours, but it is a bit tougher when you try to board at the interchanges. Air-con seems to be non-existent at peak hours. I can only feel stale air. Does it really hurt their pockets if they just blast their aircon during the peak hours?
Has our population grown so fast that our transport system cannot handle the volume of the people travelling?
I hope with the upcoming Circle Line and Downtown Line, the situation will improve. The Downtown Line looks very promising. (Link here) We need to have more interchange points at the outskirts of the city to avoid overcrowding in the city. This will also allow us to switch from one line to the other more quickly. Hopefully with all the various MRT lines functioning, transiting from places to places will be a ease. The feeder service should be opened up to other private operators and their primary aim should be to send passengers to the town central/MRT stations/bus interchanges in the most direct route possible. While SBS/SMRT can concentrate more on the trunk services.
Meanwhile I think the bus company should stop wasting money on promotion/ads that entices people to travel on their buses and improve the bus frequency (both peak and off peak) and upgrading their buses, Perharps they can start a "part-time" bus driver scheme when they hire people on a part time basis and deploy them on peak hours to improve frequency.
The premium bus service should be made two way instead of the present one way and more should be implemented to serve other areas. The present NR/Nite Owl service is quite good and should be retained and further improved.
It is a vicious cycle, with better public transport, more will be more willing to turn to public transport and so the roads will become smoother too.
